How it works

CABLIS, is an advanced system that measures the relative position between a magnet placed on a cable and a sensor to detect the tension of the cable itself, without requiring direct contact. Using a traffic light type algorithm, the system evaluates cable tension and resistance and displays whether the value is within the norm using coloured LEDs on the device.

The data is then sent to a TLB server, allowing remote monitoring of the status of lifelines and stay cables. This helps increase safety standards for fall arrest systems, reduces the time required for periodic checks, and improves prevention by scheduling the necessary maintenance.

The system

The CABLIS system consists of a magnet fixed directly to the cable. The sensor and associated wiring/instrumentation are placed inside an IP67-rated casing protection class, which prevents the intrusion of solid particles and liquids, making it suitable for outdoor use.

It is autonomous as it is equipped with environmental energy harvesting and is an IoT device with 2G/ LoRa data communication logic capable of sending data over long distances at very low power. This enables real-time rope monitoring via web interfaces, increasing safety standards.

CABLE STATUS AND MONITORING REPORT

During installation, the system undergoes a calibration process that enables it to start up and commence detecting the status of the cable. Once operational, the system will send daily or regular reports to a TLB server in the event of an alert, based on the condition of the cable. The monitoring report includes the following details:

  • System status, indicating whether the device is working and detecting accurately or not.
  • Cable status, which is interpreted according to the green, yellow, and red traffic light algorithm.
  • Battery level, which is reported as a float variable and indicates the battery voltage.

Green

The green LED indicates cable tension is within normal levels.

Yellow

The yellow LED indicates cable tension is at an intermediate level, hence indicating an alert.

Red

The red LED indicates cable tension is outside normal limits, hence requiring attention.
